About ComparePetCosts
We help UK pet owners understand the real cost of pet ownership — before the bill arrives.
ComparePetCosts was built because the information pet owners need to make good financial decisions is scattered, inconsistent, and often hidden.
Vet prices vary by 300% or more for the same treatment. Prescription medicines can be 60% cheaper online. Emergency vet visits can cost over £1,000 before treatment starts. Health plans and insurance solve different problems but are often marketed interchangeably.
We bring it all into one place: local vet prices, prescription savings, emergency costs, ownership transparency, and insurance guidance.
Why now?
In March 2026, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) concluded its investigation into the UK veterinary market. The remedies include mandatory price publication by large vet groups (from December 2026), capped prescription fees, ownership disclosure, itemised bills, and written estimates for treatments over £500.
These changes create an opportunity for a consumer tool that makes newly available data genuinely useful — not just published, but comparable, contextualised, and actionable.
How we work
- Price data — sourced from published practice websites, verified directly by practices, and (soon) official published price lists
- Ownership data — sourced from Companies House and practice disclosures
- Medicine prices — compared across major UK online pharmacies
- Independence — we are not owned by any vet group, insurer, or pharmacy
- Transparency — we show confidence levels on all data and explain our sources
Our commitment
We will never allow paid placement to influence default rankings. Sponsored listings are always clearly labelled and separated. Our job is to help pet owners make better decisions, not to sell them something.
